Dr. Dobbs FINAL Best Level Picks! Print E-mail
he Dr. Dobbs modding competition ended on June 12th, and as of then we ended our contest to win Dr. Dobbs Bobbleheads for creating the best level every week. Of course, we still have two best level winners to award with Dr. Dobbs Bobbleheads, and one final $500 best level of the month prize to award.

But please don't stop creating levels just because there are no more prizes on offer! You can still share levels with your friends and enjoy the levels currently on offer, and discuss them on our forum!

Best Levels

1. BugPit - TheChallenging by Tarsonis

We've shown a liking for vertically orientated levels in the competition so far, but this one is a favourite, combining some nice skill-testing jumps with some dangerous bug pits.

2. The Crypt by MattMadeiro

If there's one thing we've been reluctant to hand prizes out to, though, it's levels that are absurdly hard. Sure, we've given prizes to some hard levels, but in our final prize-giving week we've decieded to go all out and award a prize to the most intelligently difficult level of the whole contest. Using the mummy's special move you have to gain enough momentum to slide past bombs and time jumps exactly correctly to make your way to the end. It's probably going to take you a few hundred tries to finish this level, but think how rewarded you'll feel when you do!

$500 Best Level

Bug Tracking by Snakety

The levels we've seen from Snakety are great, and this is our favourite--a clever level in which you play the Salamander, trying to outrun some pesky bugs. You also have to make sure you're making good, steady progress because if you don't you might find yourself cut off by a bug at some point later in the level! It's a fun level--hard but never unfair--and one that's a pleasure to play through. As a result, Snakety wins the final $500 best level of the month prize.

Another Update! Looks like this is not "quite" an issue of keeping the media element in memory as part of a list. The issue is that the source stream is not removed from memory until the media element is removed from the parent canvas. I've updated my code such that it now uses a mediaelement queue, but then removes the element from the canvas before adding it back and changing the source. This seems to free up the memory. I hope this has helped some people ________________________...
