Dr. Dobbs Picks: Best Level Picks (13th April) Print E-mail
It's been three weeks since we last announced our picks of the best levels we've found on the site  -- created with our in-browser level editor -- an unfortunate gap caused by the chaos of the Game Developer's Conference and then a nasty case of the flu.

Today we'll be awarding three more best levels -- with each designer awarded a Dr. Dobbs Bobblehead -- plus announcing the winner of our first $500 "best level of the month" award for the best level created in the month of March.

Best Levels (as of the 13th April, 2009)

1. Ball Skillz by bencaron

A well designed level that feels like it's got a bit of a misnomer for a title, simply because when I play it I've found it impossible to keep my ball in play at all! But then it would be a true mark of someone with "ball skillz" to get all the way to the end of the level with a ball in play, and with that in mind, bencaron will receive a Dr. Dobbs Bobblehead.

2. That's Life by Happy

A nice single screen level that's one of our favourite so far for including a few twists on level design we haven't seen so far -- the level includes several exits, most which have mines in front of them and explode (usually by your own soccer ball) before you can get close to them. Though the level is a little clumsy (littered with soccer balls and enemies right at the start) you need to have some skill to navigate your way to the exit, and as a result Happy is the next recipient of a Dr. Dobbs Bobblehead.

3. Middle Easy or Hard? By TikmTyler

There are several levels already on the community that feature multiple pathways of differing difficulties, but this large level offers the most interesting design of any of them (in our opinion) asking the player to choose their own path through a maze-like mess of platforms. TikmTyler will also receive a Dr. Dobbs Bobblehead.

$500 March Best Level

the impossible By wet765

We'll be honest – this isn't the most obvious selection for our favourite level for the first $500 prize, but something about it stands out to us. While the level doesn't start especially well -- a mass of bugs and instantly exploding mines that characterizes a lot of levels we've seen – you're cleverly asked to move as quickly as possible and then navigate some tough -- but never too tough -- jumps in order to make your way upwards through a tall vertical level.

Vertical levels have been rare in the competition so far and this one has some perfectly pitched jumps and hazards, making it very, very fun to play though, so as a result we will be happy to award the first $500 prize to wet765 -- we'll be in touch!

Remember, we'll be awarding $500 this month, too -- the deadline still over two weeks away on the 30th of April -- so get creating!

Another Update! Looks like this is not "quite" an issue of keeping the media element in memory as part of a list. The issue is that the source stream is not removed from memory until the media element is removed from the parent canvas. I've updated my code such that it now uses a mediaelement queue, but then removes the element from the canvas before adding it back and changing the source. This seems to free up the memory. I hope this has helped some people ________________________...
